Courses Taught
Art Appreciation A broad introduction to the nature, vocabulary, and media of the visual arts of drawing, painting, prints, the camera arts, graphic design, sculpture, crafts, and architecture.
Perceptual Drawing 1 An introductory course with emphasis on the development of drawing skills to realistically represent natural and man-made forms using dry drawing media.
Perceptual Drawing 2 A continuation of Perceptual Drawing 1 using wet and mixed drawing media.
Two-Dimensional Design The study and application of art elements and principles, and principles of perception, for the purpose of increasing the student's skill in communicating visually with paints and other two-dimensional media.
Intro to Ceramics Introduction to the exploration of basic hand building and wheel techniques of working with clay. Included will be basic design considerations for traditional pottery forms as well as simple sculptural forms. There will be exposure to techniques for glazing and basic firing.
Beginning Printmaking This course will provide students with a fundamental education in the materials, methods, and history of the varied printmaking techniques. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the print processes and issues through the development of a body of original work.
Intermediate Printmaking Further work in printmaking. Students may work in one or more of the following print media: Intaglio, lithography, relief, screen printing. Students must have taken the 200 level of the appropriate print media to move to intermediate level of that same media. The course may be repeated for a maximum of 9 semester hours.
Advanced Printmaking A continuation of Intermediate Printmaking with emphasis on each student's developing and refining an individual approach to creative work. For students with a Primary Concentration in Printmaking, this course is preparation for Thesis.
Intaglio/Etching An introduction to Intaglio printing techniques also known as etching. Technical skills related to drawing, processing, and printing the metal plates will be studied. The class will consist of studio problems in plate making and printing along with lectures, quizzes, and critiques.
Silkscreen/Serigraphy An introduction to silkscreen printing as a fine art form. The class will explore various techniques used in water-based screen printing, from simple stencils of hand drawn and cut paper designs to advanced photo processes. The course will consist of studio practice, lectures, quizzes, and critiques. Technical methods involved in color use, processing, and printing will be studied.
Studies in Printmaking Independent work in an approved Printmaking topic under the direction of a studio faculty member. This course may be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours.
Visual Arts, Crafts I (HS) This one credit course, novice level, it is the first of a sequential high school course focusing on craft arts. Creating, presenting, responding and connecting drive critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to understand how craft arts communicate ideas and allows for self-expression. Through exploration and experimentation, this course provides students with a general foundation in functional art including the history of crafts, crafts of various cultures, studio practice in a variety of crafts media, safe studio practices, proper care and storage of supplies and equipment, aesthetics, criticism, and elements and principles of design.
Visual Arts, Crafts II (HS) This one credit course, intermediate level, it is the second of a sequential high school course focusing on craft arts. Creating, presenting, responding and connecting drive critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to further understand how craft arts communicate ideas and allows for self- expression. Through exploration and experimentation, this course provides students with a more in-depth study of foundations in functional art including the history of crafts, crafts of various cultures, studio practice in a variety of crafts media, safe studio practices, proper care and storage of supplies and equipment, aesthetics, criticism, and elements and principles of design.
Visual Arts, Crafts III (HS) This one credit course, accomplished level, it is the third of a sequential high school course focusing on craft arts. Creating, presenting, responding and connecting drive critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to understand how craft arts communicate ideas and allows for self- expression. Through continued exploration and experimentation, this course provides students with a comprehensive study in functional art including the history of crafts, crafts of various cultures, studio practice in a variety of crafts media to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of craft arts. Safe studio practices, proper care and storage of supplies and equipment, aesthetics, criticism, and elements and principles of design are emphasized.
Visual Arts, Crafts IV (HS) This one credit course, advanced level, it is the fourth of a sequential high school course focusing on craft arts. Creating, presenting, responding and connecting drive critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to understand how craft arts communicate ideas and allows for self- expression. Through continued exploration and experimentation, students will demonstrate critical problem solving techniques and provides students with an advanced study equivalent to college- preparatory or honors in functional art including the history of crafts, crafts of various cultures, studio practice in a variety of crafts media, safe studio practices, proper care and storage of supplies and equipment, aesthetics, criticism, and elements and principles of design.
Visual Arts, Ceramics II (HS) This one credit course, intermediate level, is first of a sequential high school course focusing on the medium of ceramics. Creating, presenting, responding and connecting drive critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to further understand how ceramics communicates ideas and allows for self-expression. Through exploration and experimentation, this course provides students with a more in depth foundation in the ceramic studio processes, art criticism, aesthetics, and art history. Students will respond to personal experiences and express ideas using a variety of traditional and contemporary ceramic process, while effectively applying the elements of art and principles of design. Safe practices and proper use of tools, equipment and materials are emphasized.
